First 7 days at home: helping an adopted pet adjust
A shelter cat or dog just moved in — how to get through the first week without stress, for the family and for the new member. The rule of three and seven.
Shelter psychologists call it the “3-3-3 rule”: 3 days of shock, 3 weeks of settling in, 3 months to become a real family member. This article is an action plan for the first seven days — the hardest stretch.
RememberYour pet’s silence in the first days is not a refusal of love, it’s how it adapts. Give it time.
Day 1: space, not affection
Prepare one room with the door closed. Bowls, a litter box or pad, a bed, one or two toys. Open the carrier — let the pet come out by itself. Don’t pet, coo, or call it in the first hour. Just sit nearby and read a book. It has to decide on its own that you’re safe.
Day 2: rhythm
Feed at the same times every morning and evening. For a shelter animal, regularity matters more than variety. Don’t give human food — its stomach isn’t used to fat and salt yet.
Day 3: meeting the home
Open its room’s door. Let it explore the whole apartment by itself. Children must stay quiet: no chasing, no loud voices. Right now even adult housemates look like giants to it.
Day 4: first boundaries
If the cat scratches the couch — DON’T scold. Put a scratching post next to it, rub on catnip. If the dog chews shoes — put shoes in the closet and give the dog a beef bone. They only remember positive reinforcement.
Day 5: first vet visit
Full exam, microchip, vaccines. Bring the shelter card. A calm visit now is what keeps your cat from turning into a trembling mess at the word “vet” a year from now.
Day 6: first walk (for dogs)
A short walk near home, just 10 minutes. Not on a busy street. Short leash. Same route a few days in a row — the dog learns.
Day 7: first night with the door open
By the end of the week most animals come to sleep near their owner on their own. A cat may come up to the pillow, a dog may settle by the bed. If it didn’t happen — don’t push. It will, in another two weeks.
What to expect in the following weeks
- Week 2–3: the real personality shows. What was “quiet and shy” at the shelter may turn out to be a tornado. That’s normal.
- Month 1: a stress shed is possible. Brush more, add Omega-3 to the diet.
- Month 2–3: you become its person. The foundation for 10–15 years together is laid right now.
A small winIf on day seven the pet walks up to rub against you — that’s the sign the plan worked. Save that moment, it only gets better from here.
